Wayang Golek

Wayang golek are wooden doll puppets that are operated from below by rods connected to the hands and a central control rod that runs through the body to the head. The simple construction of the puppets belies their versatility, expressiveness and aptitude for imitating human dance. Little is known for certain about the history of wayang golek, but scholars have speculated that it most likely originated in China and arrived in Java sometime in the 17th century. Some of the oldest traditions of wayang golek are from the north coast of Java in what is called the pasisir region.

We, Patricia and I, sit in one saung at Kampung Daun Restaurant, and we ordered typical Sundanese foods. Grilled golden fish with soy sauce, fried water spinach with shrimp pasta, fresh vegetable with peanut sauce called karedok, tofu and tempe, and fresh chili sauce were our picks. So, that's our foods're coming!

This is one of Saung, a small bungalow made of bamboos and palm leaves, a place for all guests sit and enjoy their traditional Sundanese foods at Kampung Daun Restaurant. There are more than 50 Saungs available, and each can be used by 4-6 peoples. If you prefer to sit on the chair, an open large hall is also available.

Inside of Kampung Daun garden restaurant, there are several traditional snack street sellers. One of my favorite is this sugar flower seller. Watching him working to prepare sugar flower just send me to my childhood time, when I used to enjoy waiting my sugar flower in the evening, in the front of my house. That time, I was always trigged by rich caramel scent produced by sugar flower seller like this.

Yesterday I posted a picture of Kampung Daun gate. In the front of Kampung Daun gate, I noticed a small traditional 4 wheel chariot used for transportation in small village. A bigger version of this chariot is still used in some streets in Bandung. People still use this kind of chariot for short range transportation.

Holland Bakery is one of leading bakery in Bandung, selling variety types of breads for Bandung's people. Although I, personally, prefer to go to Setia Budhi Supermarket to have my bread, Holland Bakery providing great choices for Bandung.

This event of Yogyakarta Handcrafts Exposition was organized by Yogyakarta and Bandung City Councils to promote the tourism and traditional small business in Yogyakarta. It was nice to explore this expo when you've been in Jalan Malioboro Yogya, since you could find high quality simple arts in this expo, compared with what you could see in that street.
Not many people visiting this expo though, I noticed. It's quite strange since this expo was held in one of noticeable landmark in Bandung, Bandung Indah Plaza.

Our sub ordinate is located at north-west of Bandung. It's about 3 km from the center of small satellite city of Cimahi. So, practically, it's out of busy Bandung. Farmers use this kind of wooden cart to transport branches and grass they collect in the forest. They put all things on that cart and push it from the forest down to their village. They use a "wired hand-break" attached to the handy stick to control this cart when they walk down to the village through the stiffy hill.

We met this family when Patricia, Aita, Chiquita (our new naughty puppy) and I walked at Cikole forest yesterday. It was a great walk, at beginning of year.

At last week of December it's too late to harvest paddy. This woman worked at her rice field this morning collecting her paddy grain. Once they're collected, they have to be dried in the rotary or compartment dryer. Traditionally, paddy grains are dried under the sun, which is very luxurious thing to be expected in this monsoon season.

I and Patricia walked to back of our sub-ordinate. We arrived in a small village, the village of Cipageran Wetan. We know that most of villagers living there are farmers, cultivating fruits and vegetables. In this large field we found enormous amount of chili trees. This was the reason of our visit that day, buying some chilis for our sambal (chili sauce), for our hot lunch!

I got lunch with lamb satay, fried water spinach and white rice. I had a small pot of chilli sauce, a nice one. It's indeed my favorite dish. This restaurant of Sate Maranggi is located at Jalan Trunojoyo, at the middle of busy Dago Area. BTW, that ashtray was not mine, I don't smoke! :)

We had a great time together during this 2008. Last night, Patricia, Aita and I went to the city, driving our car. Most of the time, Aita put her head out of car's window watching the situation around Jalan Pasteur. Indeed, we had a great time!

ITB's Sundanese Traditional Roof

It was founded in 1920, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) traces its origin to de Technische Hoogeschool te Bandung (THB) established by the Dutch colonial administration to meet the needs of technical resources at its colony in the region. When the school opened its door for the first time on July 3, 1920, it had one department namely 'de Faculteit van Technische Wetenschap' with only one academic major of 'de afdeeling der Weg en Waterbouw'.
This noticeable roof of major building of ITB was built based on the modernized traditional Sundanese house. I took this picture last night when I just arrived from Balongan - Indramayu, the West Java oil refinery.

We came inside the fortress hall, and I was amazed to see that the hall was well preserved. This 50 sq-m hall is devided into two smaller halls by thick wall. Because this building was practically built under the ground, the air inside is amazingly comfortable. I know it, Aita knows it.

It's always nice to walk through the history. Nobody knows how many time Dutch soldiers watch the logistic activities inside the fortress through these windows. For sure, this building was abandoned bu the end of the independence war in 1950.

Inside theis fortress, there are three buildings like this built in one row. From outside, this building looks strong, equipped with simple door and two windows. Each building practically consists of two 50 sq-meter halls. The interesting thing is that all buildings were built under the hill ground. Hence, this fortress is camouflaged by the pine trees naturally growing on the roof of the halls.

This is the picture from inside the gate of Dutch fortress. Most of the wall surrounding the fortress has been destroyed. From inside the wall, it's clearly seen that this building was designed to protect enything inside it.

About 2 km from the main forest entrance to the south, after some confusing intersections, we saw a beautiful white gate of old building. "That's it!", we screamed together. Yes, finally, we found what we looked for all this week. The gate was not big, hidden between two small hills. It's about 2 meter height and 2 meter width, and is made of thick concrete.

Walking south, that's the way the villagers told us last week. We followed the new earthy track. A bit wet though, that's because of the rain the night before. In one corner of a nice spot, we greeted a happy couple riding their ATV. At that point, we could smell the present of our fortress.

She's Back!

This is the sign of history area in Bandung. Ijzerman Park was the previous name of Ganesha Park, located in Ganesha street, in front of Institut Teknologi Bandung. It's a small park, but it means a lot for the ITB students. They use this park for their social activities, and birds watching. Birds? Oh yes, there are a lot of burung koak (fish bird) nests in this park.

This is Northern Bandung scene taken from the Gunung Putri (Princess Hill). The sky was cloudy. It doesn't surprise us though. Just like other weekends, Patricia, Aita and I went to Cikole to walk passing the pines forest. Last weekend we arrived at the west part of Gunung Putri, after a great talk with two young villagers telling us that there is an "ancient" Netherland's fortress in this area. We tried to find it, but I have to admit it, we were lost somewhere, and we couldn't find this building. I promised to myself, next weekend I'll come back and try to find it.

Sisingaan

Patricia and I went to Cihideung yesterday. Lucky us, on the way we saw a traditional gathering performing Sisingaan. Sisingaan (singa = lion) is a sundanese traditional social dance especially performed at traditional gathering and ceremony. This dance is performed by 4-6 men carrying lion litter with a child on it. This acrobatic dance is accompanied by a dynamic traditional music played by talented musicians. Believe me, they're good! :).

Theme Day: Durian, the King of Fruit

It's theme day, and we will see a lot of circles and spheres around the world's cities. I choose this Durian for my theme day. Durian is a native fruit to Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia. Some debates, this fruit is also native to Thailand and Philipines. The name durian comes from word duri (thorn). This fruit is widely known in Southeast Asia as King of Fruit. When you see, smell and taste it, you will understand why we crown this great fruit as a King.
The unusual flavour and odour of the fruit have prompted many people to express diverse and passionate views ranging from deep appreciation to intense disgust. It's clear that some will fall in love with durian, and some other will hate it. Writing in 1856, the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace provides a much-quoted description of the flavour of the durian:

The five cells are silky-white within, and are filled with a mass of firm, cream-coloured pulp, containing about three seeds each. This pulp is the edible part, and its consistence and flavour are indescribable. A rich custard highly flavoured with almonds gives the best general idea of it, but there are occasional wafts of flavour that call to mind cream-cheese, onion-sauce, sherry-wine, and other incongruous dishes. Then there is a rich glutinous smoothness in the pulp which nothing else possesses, but which adds to its delicacy. It is neither acid nor sweet nor juicy; yet it wants neither of these qualities, for it is in itself perfect. It produces no nausea or other bad effect, and the more you eat of it the less you feel inclined to stop. In fact, to eat Durians is a new sensation worth a voyage to the East to experience. ... as producing a food of the most exquisite flavour it is unsurpassed.

I had small time left, and I went to Surya Sumantri street. I greeted two men sitting in the front of that gym. In that small kiosk, they just bought two cans of Coca Cola, and a pack of cigarettes. This kiosk is just like an emergency exit for some people. When you need something, just go there first. They have what you need, it's great. They don't, it's ok.

Belgian Waffles

I told Paty that information is transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory through the hippocampus. All of the pieces of information decoded in the various sensory areas of the cortex converge in the hippocampus, which then sends them back where they came from. I explained to her that I just picked one of my beautiful memmory from my hippocampus, Belgian Waffles. We lived in Gent - Belgium for 7 years from 1991 until 1998. And waffle is definitely one of our favorite. In Sunda street, there is one Belgium cafe and resto, Brussels Spring. We visited it, and ordered their specialty, sure, waffles.
And guess what, the waffles are.... OK. :-)

Trumpet Flower

If you look at these white flowers closely, you will understand why local people call them trumpet flowers. This flower can be found easily at Gunung Tangkuban Perahu. It grows wildly at Cikole forest. They greet you when you walk down from Tangkuban Perahu to Lembang through Jaya Giri.

Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Troops, Rainbow Fighters) is the emerging Indonesian movie which has been in the theater since one month ago, and is still still attracting people to come and enjoying the extra ordinary story. This movie is based on the Indonesian best seller book under the same title, written by Andrea Hirata. telling about his child life in Belitung island. And sure, last night was Desya's turn to watch this movie. My little niece successfully seduced me to go together watching Laskar Pelangi. To my surprise, I love it, great movie!

In the middle of this year, another complex of shopping center was built at around Jalan Gunung Batu. Now, this shopping center is ready to be used. In the front of this shopping center, a new street is built connecting Jalan Pasteur and Jalan Gunung Batu. As far as I concern, this street is significantly decreasing the traffic load in that area.

Lost Giraffe?

Is that a lost giraffe? This yellow metal giraffe is placed at Jalan Cikapayang, not far from Pasupati flyover. I don't know the reason why the city put this giraffe there. Perhaps because this place is not far from the zoo located about 1 km to the north.

Ijzerman Park

This is cool metallic sign of historical area, Ijzerman Park (now: Taman Ganeca). Taman Ganeca is located at Jalan Ganeca, in the front of Institute of Technology Bandung. In Hinduism, Lord Ganeca is God of knowledge used as logo of ITB.

Rattan Shop

This kind of rattan shop can be found at every city in Indonesia, including Bandung. This small shop is located at Jalan Cihampelas. They sell all kinds of furnitures and tools made of rattan, such as buckets, boxes, chairs and tables. With 2 or 3 $, you can bring one beautiful bucket to your house. One set of furniture consisting of 2 chairs and a table costs about 20 US$. Interesting?

Pumpkins

Just wondering, who's pumpkins lying there, under the tree? Lembang is a small satellite city of Bandung. It's located about 15 km to the north of Bandung. Pumpkin is one of Lembang's major commodities, and Bandung is a great market for this kind of pumpkin.

Bandung has 2 Eletronic Centers, Bandung Electronic Center and BE Mall. But somebody thought that Bandung is still demanding more electronic shopping centers like what we have had. That's why now abandoned Sultan Plaza at Cihampelas street is evoluting to be the third electronic center in Bandung.

Teme Day: Books

Once, I posted the market of used books at Jalan Palasari sometimes ago. So, for today's theme, I choosed one of my pictures I took that time that represents our theme day, books. This man has enormous amount of used books in his not-so-big shop. I was amazed realizing that those books touch the ceiling, and he knows all his books by heart.

This is top of stupa at Vihara Vipassana Graha, the beautiful Buddhist temple in Bandung. It can be seen in the lower part of the picture that the cloud was growing. Three hours later, in the afternoon, we had a heavy rain :-).

Two Elephants and Chakra

In Vihara Vipassana Graha garden, there are statue of two white elephants with golden tusks holding a chakra. In sankrit, chakra means circle or wheel. In Hinduism and Buddhist theory, chakra is the center of energy of human metaphysical body. There are 7 primary chakras; muladhara (lower body), swadhisthana (reproductive part), manipura (navel), anahata (heart), vishuddha (throat), ajna (forehead) and sahasrara (top of head). In some Eastern thought, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, chakras are considered to be gradations of consciousness and reflect states of the soul.

Meditation Hall of Vipassana Graha

We were permitted to enter a peaceful hall where buddhists meditate and worship Buddha. The whole floor was covered by maroon carpet. A meditative golden Buddha statue and some religious images are placed in one side of hall. I told Patricia, we'll come back to meditate in this place.

Great Stupa

I posted the Vihara Vipassana Graha yesterday. Stupa is a sanskrit word literally means heap, a mound-like structure usually containing Buddhist relics. I am not sure if there are Buddhist relics placed in this stupa. A beautiful sculptured wooden door is nicely attached to this stupa sending the message of great history of Buddha in Indonesia.

Vihara Vipassana Graha

This Buddhist temple, Vihara Vipassana Graha, is located at Sukajaya Village, Lembang, Kol. Masturi street. This is our first time to visit this great temple. Beautiful and sculptured buildings covering this area makes this temple the most beautiful one in Bandung. This great beautiful stupa caught my eyes and gave me a special peaceful feeling. Not far from this stupa, there's a simple building used by monks for meditation. Patricia told me that time, that she'd come to this temple before. She likes it.

This interesting building is Piset Shopping Center, located at Lingkar Selatan Street. The futuristic design with the flying saucer on the top of its roof puts this building as a landmark at Southern of Bandung. If you notice that lion logo, it means that Delhaize opens its branch in this shopping center with Indonesian name, Super Indo.

Another Piece of Art at Babakan Siliwangi

Jalan Stasiun Selatan (see yesterday's post) is not the only one street of graffiti in Bandung. The students of Faculty of Art and Design, Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) proposed Babakan Siliwangi Graffiti project to the city hall in 2004. The city approved this project and a beautiful 600 meter graffiti became a part of Babakan Siliwangi street. In 2007, the graffiti was redrawn and is shown in this photo.

This street is about 700 m length. The creativity doesn't choose its place to emerge, so that's why the city permits the street artists to show their arts on the wall along this street. Jalan Stasiun Selatan, Southern Station street, is known as street of graffiti.

Clown of Palace

There are two statues of clowns at Istana Plaza (Istana = Palace) food court. But this afternoon, one of them was diappeared. I asked the cleaning service boy what happened with it. He told me, it was cleaned and it will be brought back tomorrow.

Little Italy

Just a great memmory, that brought us to visit this cozy restaurant. Patricia told me that she, with her long explanation about what she experienced with her friends when she visited Italy in 1996, is a big fan of pasta. I mentioned once, that I saw a small restaurant somewhere that sells Italian dishes. I don't know how, but in one hot afternoon, we sat in one corner of this restaurant, Small Italy. And hey, you will be awared instantly, that you're in Indonesia just by watching what they put on the table. A bottle of hot chilli sauce! Here, you eat eveything with this sauce.
